Gore Effect Strikes Cancun

December 7th, 2010 by Roy W. Spencer, Ph. D.

Today’s my first full day in Cancun at COP-16, and as I emerged from my hotel room I was greeted by a brisk, dry, cool Canadian breeze.

It was 54 deg. F in Cancun this morning — a record low for the date. (BTW, Cancun is nowhere near Canada).

Al Gore is not supposed to be here…but it could be that the Gore Effect has announced his secret arrival. We will check into this.

The following pic I took pretty much sums up what some are trying to accomplish here:

Is it difficult to be there with those religious clowns around. The control gnob of climate is sun and nothing else. I taught that i escape winter to florida, but i saw forecast to Orlando, High 15c to low -1c. So i’ll go to sinking Maledive’s before they,ll desapear to ocean. 🙂

Well, more cold is a sure sign of global warming, so they tell us.

I’m all for climate justice. For a start, i’d like to have a mediterranean climate here in Germany. Should be a little something for the UN, no?

  5. Mac says:

Well, the record low for December seems to be listed as 52 F – so you might want to reconsider that new record at 54 F!

    • Brian h says:

“low for the date”. I.e., Dec. 7. Read much? “December” still has 24 days to go.

I expect people without any relation to science to be confused by certain terms (just as Brian seems to be), but generally for a scientist that wants to be taken seriously saying “It was 54 deg. F in Cancun this morning — a record low for the date.” becomes a very embarrassing moment when people discover that the previous (still-standing) record for December is 52 F!

The story says 100-year low, not record low.

Mac: like you yourself say in your post the record for month of December is 52 in other words the record cold for any day in December.
Roy is saying 54 is a record for the date of December 7th. I have not been able to find a source that show the records for each date. If you have a source that shows that what the record for the date is I would like to see it.

Tom, here you can find Cancun’s daily weather summary:

    http://www.wunderground.com/history/airport/MMUN/2010/12/7/DailyHistory.html

Dr.Spencer was right, yesterday was a new Tmin record.
The previous Tmin record for December 7 was measured in 2000.
Today Tmin has scored the same record of year 2003, but looking to the measurements resolution and the daily variation that’s just a joke.
Just to say, the monthly average for the first eight days is 8°C above the record but it seems to fall down since December 1.

54deg hey? Not exactly beach weather is it. They’ll all just have to huddle together for warmth!!
The Gore effect seems to be spread far & wide, the UK is FREEZING. The AGW clique must be spitting nails, they couldn’t have picked a worse couple of weeks weather-wise.

  18. JohnB says:

    On a slightly different note.

As someone with 14+ years experience in the Exhibition Industry building stands for conferences and trade shows I can say that the stands in the photos are not cheap.

Rather than simple walls it appears that each has 2 shelves and a cupboard. This is a complex design that takes far longer to build than a straight stand and costs comparably more. The vertical black bars are the posts and the horizontal ones are individual beams that need to be screwed into place. A rough guess would put this design at at least twice as expensive as a standard desogn.

The bars are black (either anodised or powdercoated) which makes them a premium priced product and the wall panels are white, also usually a premium price because you can’t clean the stuff and it has to be replaced frequently. The panels will be either plastic or plastic coated MDF wood. It’s obviously easier to afford the premium priced things if it isn’t your own money that you are spending.

It is also a reasonable bet that if one were to go to the area when the stands are being pulled down, you would see a lot of the panels being thrown away. The ones from the EWEA stand would be, it would cost less to replace them than it would to clean them.

I think it rather hypocritical for a conference supposedly concerned with waste and pollution to use the most expensive and wasteful walling system for the conference.

Since all they are talking about is money I would like to know how money can change the environment.
Piles of cash absorb co2 or maybe only piles of my cash in the hands of the UN can do that.

13 Deg in Louisville this morning I don’t think it’s a record but it’s Cold!!

  20. Jimmy C says:

“Well, more cold is a sure sign of global warming, so they tell us.”

    Yeah, so they tell us.

Of course the way they tell it, everything is certain “proof of global climate change.” They had to drop the “warming” part because they really don’t have a clue what’s happening but it must be very bad and it has to be driven by man and CO2 so it MUST be stopped by May 21, 2012, at 3:30 pm, local, or we all gonna die on 16 July, 2,447, at 0922, GMT. (And after all, they ARE “scientists” so they KNOW what they’re talking ’bout, right?)

Gee, I was trained as a scientist, Mac, although I never practiced nor published — I just sell scientific tools to them and help solve some of their methodology problem — yet I would turn a critical eye upon anyone who would confuse the date “7 December” with the entire month of “December”, an utterly different conceptual entity.

As it so happens, such conflation is rife amongst the Warming Alarmists who consider themselves objective scientists yet conflate proxies and models with reality.

  23. Joe D'Aleo says:

The Wunderground daily summary for Cancun for December 8 shows that the low this morning reached 51F, which it appears is not only a record for the date (old record 64F in 2000) but the lowest ever for December. Gore effect indeed.

Meanwhile back in the UK, it has been reported the last week of November through the first week of December for the Central England temperature data base was the coldest such period since the record began way back in the LIA in 1659.

Vicky Pope from the UKMO was delayed in flying out to Cancun to bring the good news that it was the warmest year in the CRU record (it is likely to come in #2 or #3 if they don’t mess with it). She had reported they found some warmth in the oceans previously not uncovered (ocean warmth is sneaky that way). After four throwback winters and 3 non summers the Brits are not in the mood for such nonsense.

I’d like to have also a mediterranean climate here in Finland. But when this climate change should be happened? It’s so f@£king cold here – again…

  25. Ray says:

    Joe D’Aleo,
Since daily CET records don’t go back further than 1772, I don’t see how it is possible to say that it was the coldest last week in November/first week in December since 1659. Unless there are some data that are not published on the Met. Office website. On the other hand, it has been colder than the first week of December 1890, which was the coldest December within the CET dataset. In fact, MAXIMUM temperatures have been colder than MINIMUM temperatures in 1890 and normal MINIMUM temperatures for the first week in December.

  26. Ray says:

By the way, that is based on unofficial figures for December, which tend to be about 0.5c higher on average than the final official figures.

  27. KeithGuy says:

In the recent cricket test match between England and Australia a record number of records were broken, since records began.
    Must be climate change.

The M.O. news release on this subject contains one of their most blatant exaggerations yet. They announced that the “provisional” anomaly figure for 2010 was +0.52c, making it a tie with 1998, AT THE END OF OCTOBER! They made no attempt to estimate the likely anomaly assuming reasonable monthly figures for the remainder of the year, which, even if November and December are no colder than October, which would make the 2010 anomaly only about 0.48c, using the same method of calculation as the C.R.U., which had the figure for 1998 as 0.548c. Of course that wouldn’t have gone down very well at Cancun. I wonder if the M.O. will issue a news release admitting they were wrong? I doubt it. The really annoying thing is that the media, including the BBC, take all of this nonsense in and regurgitate it without question.

Methinks with 25 F in HUNTSVILLE (your home) this very same day…you should, “STOP YOUR WHINING”!

I’d also recommend putting much CO2 in the atmosphere on your way back to Huntsville, so that you may help keep us from the coming ICE AGE!

New record for the month set on December 8th???

I’m just saying it is listed at 50 degrees (F).

  33. Jeff Mitchell says:

While the record cold is weather, not climate, it is pretty funny. If this were record warm weather, they would be touting it pretty hard as evidence of AGW since they conflate weather with climate.

If any data proves your theory, you don’t really have one.

  35. KHill says:

I don’t know where Weather Underground gets their climate data, but the Mexican “National Weather Service” website is:
    http://smn.cna.gob.mx/

If you can read Spanish there is a link to “climatologia”, then “normales climatologicas”. Cancun is in the state of Quintana Roo. This website lists the all time record low for Cancun as 12°C. Of course, it also says this record only goes back 12 years.

By the way, the cold is reflected in other Yucatan Pen. locations as well, like Campeche…. the 52 this morning is only two degrees above the all time Dec record low of 50.

  36. Ray says:

Apparently the UK “climate change” secretary has been accused of misleading (what a surprise!), the Cancun summit:
    http://thegwpf.org/uk-news/2017-chris-huhne-accused-of-misleading-un-climate-summit.html
Also, at the bottom of the article, it says that the UK Met. Offices have stated that some of the claims made in the past about the risk of sea level rise and the Gulf Stream slowing down have been exaggerated (again, what a surprise!).
Perhaps Dr. Spencer would verify that.

  37. ecoman says:

Money does change the climate….it is made of paper which comes from tress which when cut down in great numbers causes microclimate change – money is also made from ore metals mined in areas of great activity which also create microclimate change and regional chnges due to multiplicity of human activity.

Money can further change climate by being recycled or reinvented so as to avoid cutting down forests and excessive mining thus reducing microclimate changes and alowing tress to grow well in a C02 enriched atmosphere and thus assist in the oxygen content which helps in particular humans to breathe well.

Money can be very constructive when it is handled with common sense. Meanwhile many people should try to understand that when it is hot in one place it gets cold in an other…there is this basic scientific law called cause and effect. Weathere in common parlance is a bit like a refridgerator…it requires heat to make cold – turn up the heat and increase cold, that cold creating heat needs to escape into the atmossphere where it can be described as changing the climate in its immediate surround – like a microclimate.

As much as the Warmers deny it, AGW is based on two graphs and a ‘Noncept.’ Nor is it anything New; such was proposed as soon as we determined that Aristotle’s element, Air, was a mixture. It was determined that the atmosphere weighs about 10**19 pounds and at a concentration of 300 parts per million (by volume) the CO2 weighs about 5*(10**15) pounds. Currently we produce about 10**11 pounds annually. Of the two graphs, MBH98 and the Keeling Curve, the first was summarily deconstructed and shown to be a hoax. The Keeling curve requires — over 40 years — an addition of 10**13 pounds per year. Professor Keeling would never return my calls nor answer my mail and I think he died a few years back. The ‘noncept’ is of course the ‘greenhouse effect.’ This was examined experimentally over 100 years ago by Prof. R. W Wood of Johns Hopkins U and found not to exist and High School Physics shows why: when a molecule radiates energy it cools and when another molecule absorbs that energy, it warms. So the net result is null; there is no increase in temperature. This entire fiasco is a sham and I think at least some of the ‘warmers’ know it and they are just crooks robbing the public treasury. Even the American Association for the Advancement of Science are on board the scam! One of the major factors in atmospheric temperature control is this: Each pound of rain or ice that falls has carried over 500 Btu’s high into the atmosphere where at least half that energy is radiated into the galaxy. The warmers are so entranced by a ‘noncept’ that they don’t even understand how the planet works.

If someone ever updates ‘Extraordinary Popular Delusions. . .’ this current hoax will be a chapter. My www is being reconstructed after a Warmer from Australia tried to attack my server; (his machine doesn’t work any more), and will have a link to some of my thoughts on the subject. One editor only has respond to my manuscript.

Thanks for your time and Enjoy the Day.
