Snow Piles Still in Michigan, June 16

June 18th, 2014 by Roy W. Spencer, Ph. D.

We visited Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore by boat on June 16, 2014, and there was still unmelted ice and snow piles in the shadows of the rock cliffs, just above the Lake Superior waterline.

This particular pile was about 30-40 feet long and looked to be about 6 feet thick:

For those wondering about “Icezilla“, it appears from MODIS satellite imagery to have been beached by strong winds on the southeast shore of Michigan Island, in Michigan’s Apostle Islands in western Lake Superior.

    Hi Roy,

Apparently, winter type storms will take place in late Spring & perhaps early summer (we’ll see)! This link may prove interesting: http://www.weather.com/safety/winter/montana-snow-june-20140616.

    Have a great day!

  2. First off I want to say awesome blog! I had a quick question which I’d like to ask if you don’t mind.
I was curious to know how you center yourself and clear your mind before
writing. I have had a difficult time clearing my thoughts
in getting my ideas out there. I truly do enjoy writing
however it just seems like the first 10 to 15 minutes tend to be wasted simply just trying to figure out how to begin. Any suggestions or hints?
    Appreciate it!

Stop “thinking” about the first sentence and just start typing. Save the editing for later.
If it’s cr*p, change it then. Get the idea started.
(Of course I’m assuming you already have a relatively clear idea of what you want to say.)

I have to believe there is somebody out there taking more pictures of this stuff. I still say snowballs on solstic would be a terrific photo opportunity. Any takers with a boat on the lake?

Question: We have had exceptional and continuous rain patterns for well over a week in southern MN. Rain about 12 to 18 hrs a day, then a short breather and then more of the same.
The week ahead looks like more of the same.
Looking for an answer as to what is causing this pattern.
Changes in the Pacific? Early on there was evidence of ENSO patterns. Is that beginning to happen?

    • geran says:

I suspect the moisture is coming all the way from the Gulf of Mexico.

      • darrylb says:

geran–yes, looking at Weatherstreet it does appear that could be the case. In fact much of North American is getting a lot of rain.
This much rain is unusual, and I was wondering about the cause of the pattern, and if it is related to Pacific changes.

        • geran says:

Maybe Dr. Roy can help us out when he gets time. I travel a lot from north Texas to Oklahoma. I have seen several weeks of solid, heavy, clouds moving north. I see also that ENSO waters are finally heating back up. All this should mean rain for West Texas, but it is not happening yet. (Houston got dumped on recently, but nary a drop here.)

          You’re stealing our water. 🙂

          • darrylb says:

geran– get on to weather Street and hit the US rain patterns for the next few days. Looks like rain in your area.

With any luck, the polar bears who were riding atop Icezilla made it ashore when the iceberg finally beached. Were any camera crews from National Geographic, from the BBC, or from PBS there to record their escape from the berg?

I have had many discussions about measuring energy gain/loss on planet earth with people on this blog. Here is a new study (now with a video abstract) doing a great job of explaining natural variability and climate models. It shows that deep ocean heat content is by far the best way to measure energy gain on a timescale of a decade. It implies that surface temperatures are very unreliable for measuring forcing values on a timescale of a decade. This isn’t really news but its an incredibly informative paper worth reading to completion.
