“End of days” black sky in Siberia due to “perfect storm” of smoke and clouds

July 25th, 2018 by Roy W. Spencer, Ph. D.

The UK tabloid newspaper The Sun is known for carrying National Enquirer-style sensationalist news, such as UFOs seen from the Space Station (usually window reflections).

A recent story entitled END OF DAYS Mystery as sky turns black in the middle of DAY in remote Russian towns with locals blaming secret weapons test, aliens or the DEVIL was meteorologically interesting as it described a region in northern Siberia that went almost dark for several hours last Friday, July 20, as seen in this Siberian Times photo:

Since we have several polar orbiting satellites that see everywhere on Earth a few times a day, it was natural to check out this event using NASA’s WorldView website. Here’s the VIIRS image from NASA’s Suomi/NPP satellite from around mid-day on July 20, 2018:

VIIRS image from NASA’s Suomi/NPP satellite on July 20, 2018, showing IR-identified wildfires (red dots) in central Siberia feeding smoke into a frontal cloud system that resulted in nearly nighttime conditions in the marked oval region in north-central Siberia.

Persistent wildfires, marked by the red dots, had been burning for days in central Siberia, which were producing smoke plumes travelling northeastward. A cool frontal system with clouds apparently entrained this smoke, and the combination made for extremely dark conditions on the ground. It is now known that wildfire smoke can enhance liquid cloud formation, and so a “perfect storm” of conditions resulted: (1) a natural cloud system, (2) enhanced cloud formation from smoke aerosols, and (3) the smoke layer itself (brown in the above color imagery).

This led to an almost opaque blanket that prevented sunlight from reaching the surface.

Whether UFOs or the devil were also involved, one can only speculate.

    • Gordon Robertson says:

Myki Kneejerk…”Scandinavia is experiencing exceptionally warm temperatures, over 11 C…”

Explain for us how 0.04% of CO2 in the atmosphere can suddenly increase global temperatures to unheard-of record temperatures.

Has it not occurred to you that such warming is regional? Why does the CO2 not affect the plant as a whole.

Do you not realize that a good portion of the planet has cooled while this AVERAGE warming is going on?

Prior to the pre-Industrial Era, concentrations of CO2 were at least 0.03% and did absolutely nothing.

      • Svante says:

I can explain it for you!

CO2 blocks IR in certain bands, so emission to space occurs at reduced intensity from layers that are higher and colder than the surface.

So you see the percentage is completely irrelevant, only the blocking ability matters.

        You’re welcome!

    • Myki says:

      Nice statistics.
By my reckoning, while the number of fires does not seem unusual, the average number of acres burnt seems to well above the 10-year average.
i.e. 94 acres per fire for the 10-year average
versus 111 acres per fire in 2018 (about 18% higher)

      • Chris Morris says:

That is pretty stupid reasoning for a claim about wildfires. The number and size is fairly random scatter. The fire records using their statistics go back to the 90s. Other data goes back to the 30s. Maybe if you used all that data, you could make some authoritive statement. Now it just looks like you are a schoolkid trying to back down after being caught out.

Prove that 0.04% of CO2 in the atmosphere can raise temperatures to the point where records are set. Some of the records prior to these records were set in the late 1800s and the new record is a few hundredths hotter.

Besides, many of the records are fabrications produced by the likes of NOAA and GISS. They do it by lowering the confidence levels as low as 48% (38% in the case of GISS).

  14. Chris Morris says:

As expect Myki, you cannot read past newspaper headlines.
There have been a lot of wildfires but there have always been lots of wildfires. There is nothing exceptional or unprecedented about this year’s fires, except in the minds of fevered newspaper journalists and their naïve acolytes.
What has made fires worse over the last twenty years is the suppression of natural fires, especially in places like Western North America or Australia. The instigation for this was “green” policies. This has massively increased the fire load so those fires are man-made disasters. That isn’t my opinion, it is the written papers by ecologists and forest managers. But that is just another inconvenient truth.

“Just how big a space economy could get is impossible to know, though Morgan Stanley released a study last year estimating that revenue from the global industry will increase to at least $1.1 trillion by 2040, more than triple the figure in 2016.”

“Americans are skeptical about who will benefit from space and how far our ventures should go. A survey conducted by Morning Consult for Bloomberg Businessweek found that only 37 percent of respondentsdrawn from a spectrum of backgrounds and political affiliationsthought private companies should play a major role in space exploration. Some 45 percent thought they should play a minor role, and 18 percent said they should play no role at all. Asked whether they thought humans should colonize the moon, those surveyed were almost evenly split; asked who should oversee any colonization of other planets, 58 percent said a coalition of global governments.
The results suggest a persistent idealism about spacea belief that its a place to which humankind has a common claim (at least until those aliens show up).”

“only 37 percent of respondents drawn from a spectrum of backgrounds and political affiliations thought private companies should play a major role in space exploration.”

At the moment, I don’t think private companies should play a major role in space exploration.

You could go that way, but it would require changing laws that would allow profit to be made due to private exploration. That would difficult politically, and could cause big problems.

And we spent 20 billion dollar per year on NASA, and that is NASA’s job- and problem should be focused on getting NASA to actually do important space exploration. And the yield from the space exploration, will be a gift to humankind. Or the discoveries should available in the public domain [with private it would not be- unless profit can come from making it available to public domain- which possible, but…]

But if NASA explores lunar polar region to determine if and where there is minable water- then after this, you will get lots of private space exploration- looking for other specific resource [which can used to mine stuff- it will not be public domain, but will not simply remain a secret, as once mining starts, everyone we know about it- information will be released to get investment dollar for specific projects [or as it is commonly done with all mining on Earth]].

Snowready…”Hurricane trump is wrecking the new world order infrastructure”.

It’s amusing, actually. Russia went to all the trouble of ousting Stalinist communism and the western capitalists abandoned them when they found out there was no easy pickings in Russia. Bill Browder, a Wall Street crook, whined to the US government when Russia prosecuted him for tax evasion. The US government believed the crook and installed sanctions.

Now Trump wants to get Putin’s Russia back onside and all the weenie, politically correct are having a hissy fit. I don’t care what motive Trump may have he is doing the right thing by opening dialog with Russia.

His claim that Russia did not interfere in US politics is blatantly clear. Any hacker worth his salt would not leave a trail of bread crumbs to be followed back to Russia, allowing the flat foots in Homeland Security to identify him. A real hacker would spoof them by leaving an address that was not his.

The scary part is the number of incompetents running US Homeland Security. Again, Trump has called them out for what they are as well as identifying the Russian investigation as a witch hunt.

Myki cannot come up with the scientific proof so she attacks the messenger. Still awaiting your scientific correlation between atmospheric CO2 and global warming.

Even the IPCC can only claim it is likely. To do that and rank the likelihood high they had to invent their own scale of confidence levels.

In 2012, after admitting there had been no warming over the 15 years from 1998 – 2012, they upped their confidence level from 90 to 95% that humans are likely causing the warming.

They just admitted there had been no warming for 15 years, would intelligent minds not revise the confidence level downward in lieu of that? Or did 15 years of no warming convince the IPCC gurus that it’s even more likely?

    • Gordon Robertson says:

Two of the Coordinating Lead Authors in IPCC reviews were caught red-handed in the Climategate email scandal. Phil Jones admitted to using Manns cheating method of hiding declining temperatures and he was head of Had-crut at the time. Trenberth, of NCAR, admitted in private that global warming had stopped and lamented it as a travesty that no one knew why.

Lead Authors at IPCC reviews appoint the reviewers and Coordinating Lead Authors oversee the process. Jones, a CLA, was caught threatening to block papers from skeptics along with ‘Kevin’, who he named.

Apparently they did block the papers.

This is what Myki and other alarmists condone.

I agree with everything Joe’D’Aleo has to say in the above.

TIME LINE FOR THE END OF AGW THEORY!

    2018 the transitional year.

2020 – AGW theory starts to get sidelined.

2022 – All the warming from 1850-2017 is gone.

2023 – AGW theory is considered a fraud by all but a few such as the likes of David, and others like him.

    • Gordon Robertson says:

Salvatore…”2023 – AGW theory is considered a fraud by all but a few such as the likes of David, and others like him”.

Even if an ice sheet covered the state of Oregon, where David lives, he would still claim the AGW theory predicted it and that it was just a pause in the warming.

NOAA would retroactively fudge the record to remove the cooling, completely ignoring the ice sheet. Hillary Clinton and/or Obama would still be pushing their dogmatic Climate Action Plan, still hiding it from the US Congress.

      • I know what you are saying. Still we will be vindicated.

        • Myki says:

          SDP – you are pathetic.
          1. You admit that there has been global warming between 1850 and 2017 (at least +1 deg)
          2. You provide no indication of how solar or anything else can explain this warming
          3. then predict that solar will suddenly cause a cooling of about -1deg within 3 years !

Your capacity for self delusion appears infinite and must make fellow denialists cringe.

          • I have explained all of it thoroughly many times.

          • Myki says:

Besides which, it’s more like 0.7 degC over those 167 years.

          • Gordon Robertson says:

In the period of the sun’s minimum there will be extreme temperatures in summer and winter. This is due to the decline in the temperature of the oceans’ surface and the weakening of winds. This will reduce the amount of water vapor in the air that relieves temperature fluctuations. A dry winter in medium latitudes is a cold winter.
That’s how it is now in Australia, where in the winter the minimum temperature has dropped this year.

Statewide, daytime temperatures have been 2.38 degrees above the norm, half a degree warmer than the previous record set a year earlier. Rainfall has averaged 148.1 millimetres for the state, or half the norm, and the driest start to a year since 1986.”

Some of the data for New Zealand is http://theconversation.com/new-zealands-southern-alps-have-lost-a-third-of-their-ice-28916 but hidden in the text. In 1890s, it was 170 cubic kilometres, in 1976 55 km3. in 2016, 36.1km3. At Ball Corner, the Tasman which is the largest glacier dropped 100m between 1930s and the 60s. That means by far most of the ice was lost before the 70s (when the glaciers were actually advancing). Captain Cook recorded that the Franz Joseph & Fox Glacier terminal faces were visible from the sea. By the 1850s when the first European explorers visited the area, they had retreaded back to above where the highway now runs and could not be seen from at sea.

All of the above is documented facts, not just anecdotal cherrypicking. It is only one country but it shows that there was not just Northern Hemisphere.

Melting glaciers while the Little Ice-Age? Sounds not logical. In the european alps there was strong glaciergrowing in LIA. I dont know about the rest of the world, but a time-period with melting glaciers you cant call an ice-age.

Re-freezing of melted mammoths is impossible. Within short time they are rotten or eaten by fox and wolf. They are surely melted the first time since ice-age.

That’s where you alarmists are screwed up. You talk about climate change causing this and that. Climate is a definition of the human mind to describe persistent weather patterns that are caused by forces like solar energy, precipitation, wind currents, etc.
