Electric-blue night clouds are invading the U.S.

June 11th, 2019 by Roy W. Spencer, Ph. D.

Over the next few weeks, mid-latitude observers might experience the best noctilucent cloud viewing of their lifetimes.

Extremely high-altitude noctilucent (night-shining) clouds viewed from Corvallis, Oregon on June 10, 2019 (Tucker Shannon, Google Pixel phone).

Observers over the northern half of the United States are reporting something they have never seen before — electric-blue noctilucent (night-shining) clouds. They are wispy in appearance, and continuously change shape. They can be seen when the sun is about 6 to 16 deg. below the horizon, so about 1 to 2 hours after sunset or before sunrise. During that time of night the sun is still shining on these clouds, but not on any normal weather-related clouds.

In the late spring every year, people at far northern latitudes have often seen these on clear or partly-cloudy evenings. But solar-minimum conditions, with few if any sunspots, are causing cooling in the extreme upper atmosphere around 80 km (~50 miles) high where the lowest atmospheric temperatures are recorded, approaching -150 deg. F (-100 deg. C). That altitude is above 99.999% of the air in the atmosphere.

Noctilucent clouds observed from the International Space Station on June 13, 2012 (NASA).

Adding to the spectacular electric blue displays is increasing atmospheric methane, which gets converted to water vapor at these altitudes, and increasing atmospheric carbon dioxide, which causes enhanced cooling of the upper atmosphere. The result is that the conditions necessary for NLC formation are extending farther south than ever before.

The wispy and undulating appearance of the clouds is due to upward-propagating gravity (air density) waves that cause temperatures to rise and fall, and the clouds form in the colder portions of those waves. Ice grows on meteor dust particles, creating a (nearly) outer space version of cirrus clouds. Time lapse photography has been used to show how the clouds change shape as the gravity waves well up through the extremely cold upper mesosphere:

2017 NOCTILUCENT CLOUD CHASING SEASON TEASER – 4K (UHD) from Night Lights Films on Vimeo.

If you miss seeing them in the next several weeks, take heart — solar minimum conditions should persist until the next NLC season arrives, making the summer of 2020 a good viewing opportunity, too.

You can see recent NLC photos from around the Northern Hemisphere, updated daily, here.

but but but….’global warming’, er climate disruption, er climate science, er, um climate disruption…..um….what are we calling it this week?

Remember, Maunder Minimum = Little Ice Age!

  3. Alberto says:

I was wondering if the blue color was due to all of the AGI (silver iodide) they have been spraying for Orthographic Cloud Seeding(then I read the article)….

The rainiest year on record in TN and one of the rainiest years on record on the west coast….coinciding with a huge drop in temps in the Gulf and the Pacific.

The university of wyoming has a great pdf on orthographic cloud seeding…..MAKE IT RAIN, and cover up the rapid GLOBAL COOLING we have experienced in the last four years.

The government is claiming the drop in ocean temps is due to the last Maunder Minimum we had in the late 1600’s….while ignoring the evidence that we are approaching another MM, perhaps a Grand Minimum.

  4. Chris says:

You were doing ok until you mentioned “gravity waves”… you lost all cred.

    • Roy W. Spencer says:

“Gravity waves” in this context are related to fluid flow, like what occurs on water surfaces, but also in the atmosphere (I’m sure you have seen waves in cloud fields). It has nothing to do with Relativity Theory “gravity waves”. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gravity_wave

      • Rusty says:

Oops! Looks like Chris just “lost all cred”…Ha ha ha…

      • Don says:

So aren’t they actually sound waves generated by the friction of matter accelerated by gravity?

      • Steve says:

Here in Livingston, LA (Home of the LIGO facility that discovered gravity waves) (and Laine Hardy), I knew you weren’t referring to relativistic gravity waves.

I just wanted to mention, the Livingston LIGO detected gravity waves 7 millionths of a second before the Hanford LIGO detected them, so that makes us NUMBER ONE baby! Let’s boil some crawfish and have a party !

    • bdgwx says:

Like Roy said fluid gravity waves are not the same thing as relativistic gravitational waves. One of the coolest visualizations of this effect is within strong tropical cyclones. You’ll often see the waves undulating as they race away from the core.

Pay very close attention to the following satellite loop of Typhoon Meranti. You’ll see two different types. You’ll see waves spreading out from the center not like a wave in the water after a stone has been thrown in. And you’ll waves oriented parallel along radial lines. See if you can spot both types!

Agreed. This year those high altitude clouds have appeared much later in the year than expected — at least at my latitude.

No you have not seen “clouds” like this for 75 years..These types of so called clouds only showed up the day chemtrailing began.

This is chemtrailing/HAARP and whatever else they are ruining our skies and earth with.

These clouds used to only happen at latitudes of 50 degrees and above. Ergo, instead of being an example of global warming then perhaps it’s global cooling.

BTW, the increase in Volcanic activity and decrease in solar activity could well result in a new ice age.

If a new ice age is in the making there could be a massive die off of humans. Most of us live in areas that were under ice in the last ice age of 10,000 BCE.

    • CK says:

These clouds do sometimes occur at lower latitudes, in much earlier months. The January 2016 cloud formation was exceptionally interesting.

As for these formations being associated with any type of global cooling or warming — it would be nice to have someone compile a collection of papers on this to make it easier to understand the collective intelligence on this matter.

    • Entropic man says:

      Anymouse

Global warming refers to the effect of greenhouse gases on the temperature of the troposphere, the surface and the pceans.

The same process cools the stratosphere. If a cooler stratosphere is mpre likely to produce noctiluscent clouds, then a link between the two is credible.

      • frgough says:

The troposphere and stratosphere are physically connected. The cooling of one will cause the cooling of the other via conduction.

      • bdgwx says:

frgough, all the more reason that the simultaneous warming of the troposphere and cooling of the stratosphere is peculiar.

Both you and Em should realise that there has been no warming of the troposphere over the longest period – four and a half billion years.

The surface is no longer molten. It has cooled. The troposphere is no longer heated by a molten surface. It has cooled.

Maybe you need to describe the non-existent GHE in such a way to include these inconvenient facts? I doubt it – nobody else has managed to – not even the self appointed Nobel Laureate, Mike Mann, nor the self proclaimed climate scientist, Gavin Schmidt.

The only thing peculiar is the mindless devotion of the GHE true believers to the delusional pseudoscientific climate cult leaders!

I suppose you would quote something I wrote, and come back with some utterly devastating response – if you could just find your book of devastating responses. Maybe you left it with the GHE description you were working, or maybe it is with Trenberth’s missing heat, or Mann’s Nobel Prize? You don’t need to thank me for the hints.

          Cheers.

One way to falsify that hypothesis is to measure the global mean temperature and see how it is changing. If it is not changing or if it is increasing then you’ve have falsified the hypothesis.

      • Swampgator says:

So, you know of such a method that can measure the GMT?
I am only aware of methods that can estimate/approximate that value using grided sample points and computer models.

        • bdgwx says:

Yes. That would certainly be a way of measuring the global mean temperature. When I say “measure” something I don’t mean imply that the recorded value will be perfect. In fact, in the majority of cases spanning all disciplines of science this is par for the course. I fully accept that.

          • Mike Flynn says:

In real scientific disciplines (physics for example) accuracy can be pretty good. For example –

“The electron magnetic moment has been measured to an accuracy of 7.6 parts in 10^13.”

That’s better than measuring the distance between New York and Los Angeles to the thickness of the finest human hair. GHE true believers cannot even say what it is they are claiming to measure. What in blue blazes does “global mean temperature” actually mean? You can’t even define such a witless thing, let alone measure it, can you!

Pseudoscientific fool – away with ye!

            Cheers.

      • Alberto says:

How do you explain the largest drop ever recorded in average global temperatures in 2015 and 2016? How about the huge drop in sea temps in the Gulf as well as the Pacific? Is that what happens when ‘heat hides in the oceans’?

I bet the mainstream media just forgot to report that!

It’s an Inconvenient Truth, after all, and the media does not deal in truth.

The 7 men who run 98% of the media all agree on that.

        • Dr Paul says:

Because when you’re talking about historical trends, you need a larger sample size than just 1 or 2 years, where the overall climate of the planet can be affected by specific events. In this case it would be a series of La Nia events & a negative phase of the lesser-known Pacific Decadal Oscillation which caused shifts in ocean circulation patterns that moved some excess heat into the deep ocean. You know the Jet Stream right? Well theres the same kind of thing that takes place in the oceans, which has an effect on you guessed it, our planets climate & global temperatures.

I selected just one graph that covers a span of 140 years but feel free to find one from a source you trust. You can clearly see a significant increase this past century http://berkeleyearth.org/2018-temperatures/

Also going back thousands of years, around 1000 during the Medieval Warming period, temperatures rose as well, but not to the levels we’re seeing now.

Mike Pompeo last week said “well if the climate changes people can simply move away”. Well all these migrants we’re seeing from Central America invading the US, don’t you wonder why theyre coming here? 1/3 of all jobs there are agricultural in nature. They’ve experienced years of droughts. They can’t grow food, can’t work, can’t eat, can’t survive so like Pompeo said, they’re moving. But climate change isn’t occurring so there’s nothing to worry about & no reason for them to uproot their lives & travel 1000’s of miles on a dangerous journey in the hopes of a better life. Our own military folks at the Pentagon have labeled climate change as a National Security issue. Be thankful they rely on science over corporate profits that maintain the status quo. I sure am, hopefully my kids who inherit this planet will too

I agree. I use a sample size of four and a half billion years or so, and the global temperature has definitely dropped over this period.

If you look between your feet, you should not see any molten surface. The surface has cooled. Neither four and half billion years of accumulated sunlight, nor the mythical GHE, nor the completely useless computer graphics of Gavin Schmidt, nor even the self awarded fake Nobel Prize of Michael Mann have managed to stop the cooling.

Nice retort their Racklefratz. You might want to due some investigating on your own before making baseless comments. I won’t do it for you but you might want to do some reading on Canadian Professor David Keith and his bold plan to blanket the skies with aerosol disbursements. Also part and parcel with funding is none other than Bill Gates. People who have taken to calling out others as “tin foil hat wearing” or the genrallt disparaging term of “Chemtrails” are usually either one of two things. The first is a blind ignoramus. The second is a paid boiler room disinfo stooge. Are you also the type of person who would suggest that our very own govt did not conduct dosing of unwitting participants in order to develope mind control? Surpise junior…the docs of MK Ultra are there for the viewing.

Geoengeneering is perhaps the term you should use to initiate your research. Geoengeneering does in fact involve releasing aerosols from jets. These streams of chemicals “chemtrails” if you like contain large amounts of metals. These metals can then also be exited via microwave energy ( the waves you see in photo) thus steering the mass to whatever means the psychos in control dictate. 5G cellular network, war applications, weather modification can all be involved in the “reason” why. Further on is the financial investments of weather commodities (look it up) to enrich oneselves off of others misfortune after the next “FREAK WEATHER EVENT”. Do some reading and wake up. At this point one would have to be almost blind or staring at the ground to deny the visual proof.

It cools faster and farther on dry, cloudless desert nights than it does on clear nights where it is humid even when there is no dew or frost. This well-known observation demonstrates that water vapor is IR active at earth temperatures (i.e. a ghg), that there is a GHE and that WV is at least a substantial contributor to it.

      • Mike Flynn says:

        DP,

From my point of view it shows the precise opposite. Increased so called GHGs (CO2 and H2O) result in lower ground temperatures, by impeding incoming solar radiation, thus reducing the amount impinging on thermometers.

The absence of GHGs provides the highest surface temperatures in the world – the Libyan desert, for example. Arid tropical deserts are characterised by, well, aridity.

Clouds are either sparse to none, so that radiation from the surface to space is also minimally impeded. This of course results in rapid cooling after sunset.

In the same vein, the lowest temperatures on Earth are found on the Antarctic continent, also having little H2O above it. The driest continent on Earth, actually.

        You wrote –

“This well-known observation demonstrates that water vapor is IR active at earth temperatures (i.e. a ghg), that there is a GHE and that WV is at least a substantial contributor to it.”

No GHE necessary. As I may have pointed out previously, you cannot even describe the mythical GHE in any way which would allow a testable GHE hypothesis to be formulated.

In the long run my observations have convinced me that some men, reasoning preposterously, first establish some conclusion in their minds which, either because of its being their own or because of their having received it from some person who has their entire confidence, impresses them so deeply that one finds it impossible ever to get it out of their heads. Such arguments in support of their fixed idea as they hit upon themselves or hear set forth by others, no matter how simple and stupid these may be, gain their instant acceptance and applause. On the other hand whatever is brought forward against it, however ingenious and conclusive, they receive with disdain or with hot rageif indeed it does not make them ill Galileo

I did see them in central-western Washington skies on the evening of June 10 and I stopped and stared as I had never seen clouds like this color and texture. The Phx night skies are to bright and dry for this. To much time in the sun for you.

  28. Daniel Deal says:

This is nothing new. Been seeing this in the southern US pretty much all of my life. BS Fake News.

    • Roy W. Spencer says:

I suspect what you saw was cirrus clouds shortly after sunset. These clouds are much higher up (at least 10 times as high), and are only visible after “normal” clouds have gone dark. And not in the southern U.S. (although in the current event, there has been 1 report from northern Oklahoma).

No research needed. I have a hockey stick graph that proves it’s bad.
All that argon came from broken incandescent lightbulbs, something the global lighting conspiracy wants to hide.
Just ban lightbulbs, that will solve the problem. Save the research money for important things, like government-funded art history degrees for GED recipients.

    Thanks Roy,
We are in central WA State.
Sent your link on to others; some that like taking sky photos.
With “mostly clear” night sky this week, we might have a look.

Dr. Spencer, do you have any thoughts on the unknown light of Fatima fame?

Tin foil hats must be properly be equipped with a rubber band to hold it in place. Never mind the risk that someone may start snapping the ‘heck’ out of their rubber band and be stunned back into some semblance of reality.

Dr. Skov also discusses this in her weekly YouTube report. https://youtu.be/wZ92MP2CcuY?t=104

  34. Lo says:

The Nasa image from ISS in 2012 is “surprising”.
To take a picture of the clouds at 85 km hight from an angle below, while cruising at 350 km height needs a distance of at least 2500 km.
To see this detail from 2500 km distance is “surprising”.
    Did NASA mislabeled this picture?

  35. Juerg Brechbuehl says:

I find it funny to read this article. I live in rural place where you can see much of the stars in the sky. Just yesterday when walking late in the evening and looking at the stars, I thought it strange that I see bright smears at high altitude that do not possible look like the milky way. At a certain age you think, that you have seen it all. And then one day, there it is, smears in the dark night sky and it turns out to be high altitude clouds. I enjoyed it. Thanks for the article.

  36. David Stewart says:

They say it’s from methane. Perhaps it’s the CO2 which they say has caused greening of the planet. Plants eventually die and produce more methane from its decomposition. Just a thought.
